Six new advisory opinions recently released by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG) have effectively given the green light to hospitals to offer incentives to physicians for implementing cost-saving measures through gainsharing arrangements. In opinion Nos. 05-02, 05-03 and 05-04 (released February 17) and opinion Nos. 05-05 and 05-06 (released February 25), the OIG approved gainsharing arrangements between hospitals and physicians.
